Identification: manufacturer, model, variant

Nothing else can be assessed until the firearm is correctly identified. Manufacturer and model set the baseline; variant frequently sets the ceiling. Scarce factory variants, early production features and transitional configurations are routinely missed by sellers and by inexperienced buyers.

Caliber, gauge and chambering

Chambering affects demand directly. Common, currently supported calibers have a broad buyer pool. Obsolete chamberings narrow the market, though on collectible firearms an original scarce chambering can do the opposite and increase value.

Age and production period

Age is context, not value. Production period matters because it tells us which features, markings and materials should be present — and therefore whether the firearm is original.

Condition

Condition is assessed across several separate dimensions rather than as one grade:

  • Mechanical condition — function, timing, lockup, safeties
  • Finish — original bluing, case colors, parkerizing, plating and their retention
  • Bore — rifling, pitting, frosting, crown condition
  • Stock, grips and wood — cracks, repairs, sanding, refinishing
  • Screws and small parts — buggered screws indicate disassembly history

Originality

Originality is separate from condition and often more important. We look for original finish rather than a refinish, original grips or stock, original sights, and factory-correct small parts. On military firearms, matching components are decisive.

Modifications — drilled and tapped receivers, cut barrels, added sights, aftermarket triggers, refinished surfaces — permanently affect collector value even when they were done well.

Accessories and documentation

Complete packages consistently evaluate higher than bare firearms.

  • Original box with correct labels
  • Manuals, hang tags and warranty paperwork
  • Factory letters
  • Original magazines, tools, grips and cleaning equipment
  • Optics, mounts and cases
  • Purchase receipts and prior appraisals

Provenance

Documented history adds value when it can be supported by paperwork, photographs or records. Family history that cannot be verified is respected but not priced.

Rarity and scarcity

Scarcity is a multiplier, not a value in itself. A rare firearm nobody collects is simply an uncommon firearm. We look at how many examples exist, how many survive in this condition, and how often they appear for sale.

Collector demand and current market conditions

The final factor is what the market is doing right now. Through our participation in the firearm market as Nortex Guns, we see real transaction results across categories — which models are moving, at what levels, and which have cooled.

We use comparable sales of similar firearms in similar condition, weighted toward recent results.

Evaluation versus appraisal

We use the term firearm evaluation deliberately. Our evaluation supports a direct purchase offer. A purchase offer is not necessarily the same thing as a formal insurance, probate or certified appraisal, and it should not be substituted for one where a formal appraisal is required.
